Advanced Orthopedic Procedures at Heritage Animal Hospital
At Heritage Animal Hospital, we are proud to offer advanced orthopedic procedures, including cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) repair, correction of luxating patellas and bone plating for fracture repairs, along with other corrective surgeries. These procedures have traditionally been performed by board-certified specialists. Our veterinarians, Dr. Amber Waun Smith and Dr. Shayne Wireman, while not specialists, are experienced general practitioners, who have completed extensive continuing education and advanced training to make these surgeries more accessible and cost-effective for our pet owners, while maintaining excellent surgical outcomes for our patients.
If your pet has been diagnosed with an orthopedic condition, we are happy to schedule a surgical consult to discuss available treatment options and help determine the best course of action for your pet.
TPLO
The Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) is a specialized surgical procedure and considered the gold standard to treat cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injuries in dogs. A torn CCL, similar to an ACL injury in humans, can cause pain, lameness, and joint instability. TPLO surgery stabilizes the knee by altering the angle of the tibial plateau, allowing the joint to function without reliance on the damaged ligament.
At Heritage Animal Hospital, Dr. Amber Waun Smith performs the TPLO procedure with precision to promote faster healing, improved mobility, and long-term joint health. Postoperative care includes pain management, rehabilitation guidance, and follow-up evaluations to ensure the best possible recovery for your pet.
The price range for the TPLO procedure at Heritage Animal Hospital ranges from $3500-4500, based on size and weight. This estimate includes pre-surgical bloodwork and ECG, all necessary medications and follow-up visits with x-rays. A more precise estimate based on your pet’s weight can be provided at the time of the surgical consult.
OrthoSta
As an alternative to the TPLO, Dr. Shayne Wireman offers the OrthoSta extracapsular procedure for cruciate repair. This procedure is an option for dogs under 60 lbs.
The traditional extracapsular lateral suture technique is the oldest surgical correction for cruciate ligament injury in dogs. The name of the procedure originates from the fact that the joint is stabilized outside the joint capsule (externally). The OrthoSta procedure performed at Heritage Animal Hospital is an upgraded version of this technique, using more stable (isometric) anchor points, stronger material, and a knotless system by utilizing an interference screw.
The price range for the OrthoSta procedure at Heritage Animal Hospital ranges from $2000-3000 based on size and weight. This estimate includes pre-surgical bloodwork and ECG, all necessary medications and follow-up visits with x-rays. A more precise estimate based on your pet’s weight can be provided at the time of the surgical consult.
Advanced Regenerative Therapies for Pets
Cold laser therapy is a non-invasive, drug-free medical treatment that uses laser light energy to reduce pain and inflammation and to promote healing. This innovative technique uses deep-penetrating light energy to activate a positive cellular response that stimulates your pet’s body to heal itself. Laser therapy also causes an increase in endorphins, which naturally diminish pain and help your pet feel better faster.
Pet laser therapy has no side-effects and is a viable alternative to surgery or prescription drug treatment. Heritage Animal Hospital offers Companion Laser Therapy to treat a variety of acute and chronic conditions, including:
- Post-surgical trauma
- Muscle sprains, ligament tears, and fractures
- Ear infections
- Skin wounds
- Arthritis and tendonitis
- Degenerative joint disease
- Spinal injuries
- Oral surgery pain relief
Stem Cell Therapy
Heritage Animal Hospital provides stem cell therapy as a medical treatment to help repair and regenerate damaged tissues. Stem cells are unspecialized cells that can renew themselves through cell division and differentiate into specific tissues or organ cells. During the procedure, stem cells harvested from your pet’s bone marrow and fat tissue are introduced into the body to help repair muscles, joints, ligaments, and tendons. Stem cell therapy is often used to treat osteoarthritis in dogs and cats.

The team at Heritage Animal Hospital will guide you through each step of your pet’s surgical procedure from admission to after care. All pets receive preoperative blood panels, preanesthetic testing, and other diagnostics, including radiography and ultrasound as necessary. We also carefully observe your pet’s vital signs throughout surgery and the recovery period, and we provide detailed instructions for at-home care.
